How inaction could lead to a massive roster overhaul…again

Good evaluation.

Not a fan of Sather but there is some truth to his argument. Had the Rangers gone out in the first round some of these guys would be quick to resign at a lower rate.

Will Sather be able to get through this without moving at least one more big contact?

Couldn't have said it better Jan, it was a nice run...for the players, not Sather

These prospects better acclimate themselves quickly because it looks like they're here, we could see a 4th line of Carcillo-Lindberg-Fast which doesn't scream forecheck pressure and then what Kristo in for Pouliot? Sather must have failed chemistry when he was younger

He won't have to move anymore contracts, all the UFA's are gone starting tomorrow, nice job Slats!

There is no one left to move. Unless you plan on moving Rick Nash that is really the only option. Can't really move St. Louis gave up way too much for him. You're not going to get rid of Stepan or Hagelin considering their value and their minimal cap hit. Girardi, Mcdonagh, and Staal are basically untouchable especially for what they make. Kevin Klein you could move but for what purpose at a 2.9mil cap hit.

Zuccarello and Brassard may get a few 100k more, but it's very doable to sign a few key guys back. This assumes Fast and Miller make the roster, and I recalled Allen as a 7th D-man. But we still have ~2M left for a free agent winger/center.

IDK how I'd feel paying Boyle 3M though. That money would better be used if we signed a 4th line winger for <1M and then pooled the extra 2M we'd save with the additional 2M we already have to get 1 solid top 6 center/winger instead.

Stralman is obviously a goner in my situation as well.

As easy as it is to blame Sather, we also need to realize that whatever he's doing (or not doing for that matter) is not just his decision. He's not sitting there alone making and executing the offseason plan based on what he alone wants. Whatever the Rangers offseason plan is was agreed upon in consensus between him, Gorton, AV, and I'd even say Gordie Clark and some other key members of the coaching staff and executives. It's easy to make Sather the scapegoat, but do you really think if AV told Sather to keep Dominic Moore that Moore would still be an UFA right now given his reported demands?

Sather is the face that carries out the plans, but he's certainly not the one that sits there by himself in a locked room making them without any input from the coaches or other executives.

Don't be surprised if the wheeling-and-dealing TBLightning go after veteran centre Dominic Moore.

Shane O'Brien would be a decent trade target. Only makes 2 mill. Good 3rd pair guy

Trade Moore for a winger or RH d

There are definitely teams in worse shape than us, but this cap situation is the reason why when some of you guys were going nuts talking about trying to get Eric Staal and his 8.25 million cap hit in here I was like y'all crazy.

Every year I wonder if the Rangers are finally going to be the target of an offer sheet.

Is this the year?

I honestly can't get a feel on how this free agency period is gonna play out. It is crazy to think but this roster could have a lot of turnover again.

I know they traded Dorsett to clear up cap space...but maybe his 1.6 million dollar cap hit won't look to bad for what he brought to the team and what they are about to lose to teams that are going to overpay for the rest of that line. The kids better be ready to fill in this lineup.

I know for a fact that Zuccarello and his agent would have taken a two year deal for 1.5 million each season last summer and Slats squeezed him on a one year 1.15 million.

Now the chicken is coming home to roost, or however the saying goes.

I don't think so. I still think they have a pretty high cap, and they have to consider resigning Bishop after this summer and Stamkos after next year.

He wouldve become an ufa after next season though correct? And the few 100k extra would've made signing stepan even more problematic.

even so, to have Zuccarello this year coming up at 1.5 million would have been fantastic

Would've been a bargain, but them we're looking at potentially 5M+ to retain him long term with his ufa status rather than 4.5M due to his rfa status. Maybe sather can keep zucc and brass to sign for 4M? He always seems to pull something out of his ass when it comes to rfas.

I guess it all would have depended on what kind of season Zucc has next year. Coming off a year where he lead the Rangers in scoring, yea that isn't helping the Rangers in their negotiations this summer.

Agree totally Jan. I hate that this team goes through so much upheavel every offseason, enough! It took the team until the playoffs to really finally get it together, same as the year before before flaming out in the Boston series.

Our entire 4th line seems to be destined to be gone. Dom Moore actually might be the biggest loss in my opinion. It sucks having so much money tied up in a few players.

True, but sathers leverage right now is his rfa status and only 1 good season. Imagine how facked we would be if he had back to back great seasons and ufa status
